My only point is that the length of the vent pipe supposedly is important, I
didn't think ours was that long, but I don't remember him saying how long
was too long.

Quoting from _Black & Decker Codes for Homeowners_, Clothes Dryer Exhaust
Requirements, page 36:
"Duct Length
"1. Do not exceed 35 feet developed length between the beginning of the
clothes dryer duct and the duct termination, unless the clothes dryer
manufacturer's installation instructions allow a longer length. Developed
length means the straight line length of the duct, reduced by bends in the
duct. The clothes dryer manufacturer is rarely known during construction,
so the manufacturers installation instruction exception rarely applies.
"2. Reduce developed length by 2 1/2 feet for every 45-degree bend and by 5
feet for every 90-degree bend. You may use the maufacturer provided
delveloped length for long radius bends.
"3. Do not include the transition duct in the dryer duct delveloped length.
"4. Note that the IRC Fuel Gas Chapter 24 limits the duct developed length
to 25 feet for gas-fired clothes dryers."
This is a handy book to have around. It's clear and easy to understand, has
some nice, illustrative pictures, and includes electrical, mechanical,
plumbing and building codes. I was looking something up a few nights ago on
the NY state residential building codes website, and the charts I found are
word-for-word the same as the chart in this book. So when I have a question
that might pertain to code(s), I look here first. Oh, and I got it at Home
Depot for $24.99.
Hope this helps.
