Re: [DIY] Ants

Hi DDJ,

Thanks for the info. If you can remember that bait, that would be great. I guess i have to figure out what kind of ant this is, and then target it with a certain poison? its really getting bad.

We use two different products.  Ant Kilz is a wet bait that we put dots around places we've seen the ants indoors.
Outdoors we put down a granular product called .....darned CRS Syndrome again. I'll go out to the shed tomorrow
and find the name. It is dry and gets put around the foundation outside the house. If we get over run, we call
Orkin for a couple months and then return to the DIY methods. We've called Orkin twice in 17 years.

Summer rainy season has the ants looking for dry places. They used to climb up into my mail box (sits on a pole).
A couple years ago I planted Lantana around the box because it is pretty.  Haven't seen any ants in the mail box
since.  Don't know if is because of the Lantana, but I suspect ants don't like the smell.

If they are citronella ants, Univ of PA says they may be nesting under the foundation and swarming season they
come up through cracks in the floor, or find crevices near the doors. Orkin has an ad that claims to be able to control
citronella ants. If Orkin can do it, so can we.  :)

You know, now I am not even sure it's a citronella ant. I assumed it, but these ants are not yellow.

Has anyone tried anything different than boric acid?

I had the same experience that dry boric acid doesn't seem to work on
ants. It works extremely well on any other insect, especially cockroaches.
Mixing boric acid with some water, sugar or fat and using it as a bait,
might work. Maybe try mixing it with what you see them going after.
