Re: [DIY] Re: Bill, Wall liner / ceiling paper?

You are pretty much on target, Lauren.
I'd want to see a pic before giving advise.
SOME are easy. Some are costly.
I don't tend to work w/o permits, personally.
If it's tricky, I'll say so & suggest local professional
help, for them.

(Yes - Sanded grout, as was said... This MIGHT mean
the same color or it might not be an exact match. It
means removing most of your existing grout. Sorry.
That is a pain...)

Hi Bill;

That "ceiling raise" thing can get real tricky. First,
if the roof is built with trusses, the structural strength
is destroyed by doing that, and must be reproduced in some
other way. That not only requires design knowledge (building
department will require a licensed structural engineer to do
it) but it will just plain be a huge amount of work. Anything
that is done that way must tie all the way across the house
(across meaning perpendicular to the ridge). That does not
mean that the ceiling would have to be raised all the way
across, just that the structure, which the higher ceiling
is part of, would need to reach all the way across. It
could also create insulating and attic venting issues,
near the exterior wall(s) It is definitely not a design
job for an ameteur, or even many proffessionals. If not
done properly (not a simple thing to know) it could
critically weaken the structure, which would not show
up until the structure was stresses, at which point
it could collapse.....Be very careful.
