Re: [DIY] Whole house water filters

A sediment filter would collect the solid particles and some of the iron.  It is a cylinder that inserts in the supply line (cold water) as close as possible to the entrance to the bldg.  I have always used one and feel they are great.  Cost for the filter is less than $50 + installation.  The hard water issue (calcium deposits) requires a water softener and is much more costly.  I have had one of these before as well and loved it.  You will use less soap, have no deposits in the water heater and shower head, and save damage to plumbing fixtures.  They used to make one that was manual regeneration so you recharged it only when needed + was less than $250.  I haven't seen that lately.  You also have to buy lots of rock salt for it.

You said that it was not an option for you.  Why?  Just the cost?  Look on EBAY or Craigs List for a used one.  If it is because the pipes are in the slab, go to the point outside where the supply pipe enters the slab and cut into it to loop it in and out for the softener.

We have very hard water here on the farm, lots of mineral/iron deposits.  Our barn is all concrete floors and the pipes come up through the concrete.  I know the water heater builds up deposits and I gave up on expensive coffee makers and just use a basic Mr. Coffee and the washable filter catches the sediment.

Our water tastes wonderful, no problem there.   A water filter at the sink would handle the coffee pot situation but I am concerned about what it's doing to the hot water heater - which is a lot more expensive than a new coffee pot.  Checking online there is a big price difference within each category for well water.  Also, how would you go about installing a whole house filter to the pipe where the water comes in from the well.  Our neighbors put in a water softener and a whole house filter when they built 20 yrs ago - but we don't have that option and I don't know if it's worth spending thousands of dollars to put one in.  Any advice?
