Last minute bidding is called sniping. Doesn't sound good but it works and if you do it right will keep driving the price up on your part to a minimum.
This is an example, a free one, of one of the programs I was speaking of:
http://www.jbidwatcher.com/
You can set it up to send bids at the last second with a limit of the amount your willing to pay and the increment of each new bid.
Popular items are bid at the last second, often, and are lost if not bid on successfully in comparison to your competition.
Sometimes auctions end at odd hours of the night. If you aren't accustomed to be awake then a utility like this can come in handy.
I used one once and it worked well. I've since had to reinstall my operating system and don't have it anymore, so I don't know which program it was. There are a few of them. But when looking for one, you have to be really careful about what you download and run. Some links can lead to virus programs.
In 2008 I bought an old lathe. It had to be rebuilt and needed a lot of obsolete parts. Ebay had most of them. But bidding was very competitive. I lost a lot of bids for parts I really wanted. In my bidding experience I learned how the bidding progressed. Early bidding did nothing but drive the price up, the only bid that counts is the last highest bid.
Best of luck to you, however you approach it.

Found out that the bidding problem was with my account, not the sellers. All straightened out now so we will see what happens next Sunday when the bidding runs out.
