Some folks refer to yellow bumble bees as yellow jackets. Where I came from,
the black and yellow striped paper makers were called yellow jackets. The
ones that live in the ground are probably bumble bees.

inside man-made structures, or in soil cavities, mouse burrows, etc.
I've come across the occasional yellow jacket nest in the ground. Pouring
gasoline on the nest takes care of them.
