My Shepard was also smart. If the phone would ring, she would grab my meal knowing the ringing phone had my attention. She would also look at the window making me look as well all the while taking the opportunity to get my meal.

Hi Joyce, Mike is correct, you can purchase metal panels for the door. They are usually used at the bottom to protect from scuffs, however, I have seen them used under the window too — which would probably be the area you have problems with. Offhand I would guess they are about 8-10"high and the width of the door. I think I've seen them in Lowes.
Pretty smart dog :) Our big shepherd will stand up and put his paws on the oval window and if no one comes to let him in he moves over and looks in the big kitchen window.
