Dogs are really smart.  I had a mini poodle that one time during lunch stood at the door barking like someone was at the door.  When I checked and found no one there, I returned to the table to find him eating my meal.

Hi Joyce, Mike is correct, you can purchase metal panels for the door.  They are usually used at the bottom to protect from scuffs, however, I have seen them used under the window too — which would probably be the area you have problems with.  Offhand I would guess they are about 8-10"high and the width of the door.  I think I've seen them in Lowes.  


Pretty smart dog :)  Our big shepherd will stand up and put his paws on the oval window and if no one comes to let him in he moves over and looks in the big kitchen window.
