I agree with Dale. I always use screws, except for when I need to use 16d nails. Even then I both screw them and nail them. With screws, they hold better, last longer, and, if you make a mistake (which hopefully won't happen much), all it takes it unscrewing the screws and there is no more damage to the wood by trying to pull out nails.
With fences (something I learned when I moved here to Tennessee from California), if you are in a humid environment (like TN) you need three horizontal boards between posts, not just two (as we neededin CA). That helps keep the boards from warping; there is still some shrinkage, but not the bending you'll get if only the top and bottom are secured.

My neighbor`s fence on my side has a lot of vertical wood slats to replace. The are warping and the nails are backing out. HD is having a sale on fence slats. Would a screw be better to put new slats up? It was a cheap fence to begin with.. Thanks group.
