Re: [DIY] For the Holidays, I got a burnt out fridge

In that case, my Genie was not all that she was cracked up to be.  Who let her out!

Yeah, once you let out the magic smoke, it never seems to work right…

Mike, I wish I could describe the smell.  I just know that it was odd.  The strangest thing was the smoke going up and then a smoke literally rolling along the floor as you would see fog in a horror movie.

Ray, I bet you are exactly right about that.  I wonder if that little dried green chip piece had basically semi-sealed the hole (as it was bubbling out or something).  Flaking that off perhaps completely exposed the hole.  I wonder if the smoke like substance that was rolling over the floor was the gas?

Looks like this guy had a similar event...

There was also another complaint with the same type of thing.  The poster mentioned something that I was wondering as well.  He said that he understands that things break down but would prefer that his house not catch on fire in the process.

First off, why would this copper tube have a hole and a leak.  Secondly, why wouldn't there be some sort of safe automatic shut down device that would stop such an event (sparks, flares and smoke) from happening.

I'm going to inspect further this evening to see what I can find.  This person shows some photos of his parts after a similar type of thing...

The green in the leakage is colorant to let the repair tech locate the leak. Once the gas leaked out, and air leaked in, the heavier air stalled the compressor, and burned out the compressor. That's the smell of burning wire.

how did the smoke smell-like burning wires or something else? a hole in the coil should not start a fire, just a refrigerant leak. the green deposit could indicate a leak, as copper decomposes with a green patina
