Try putting a thin bead of clear acrylic latex caulk on the back about 1/4 inch from the end.  Then using a wet short bristled brush work the wet caulk into the
root of the cut at the end of the runner.  Allow to set over night and this will lock in the carpet fibers.  The caulk is water soluble until it has set up  and can be worked into the fibers of the carpet where it will not show.

We bought some berber carpet once that we didn't to make wall-to-wall, so we had it cut and bound. They used a very wide, heavy seam binding tape and sewed it over the edges. It looked nice. If you were to do it yourself, find upholstery needles.
