My main machine is still down, but what probably happened is that the 12vdc died and in the process allowed the hard drive to spin down, which also caused data for the programs that were open at the time to be corrupted.  I say this because I noticed that the fan speeds were also reduced indicating low voltage.  I did get it back for a couple of days but it died again and will undoubtedly need a Power supply replacement.  It is a Dell by the way and is the first Dell we have had a problem with.  I see that Dell is offering a new machine with a 500 gb hd and 4 gig ram for 479.00 so if there is very much else wrong I will probably replace the machine and just hope the HD is still running so that I can recover most of the other data.
