Back in the mid 1950's the midshipmen at the US Naval Academy took it upon themselves to create a gigantic water hammer by synchronizing their timing of all of the urinals, stools and faucets on the campus to shut off at the same instant. The resulting water hammer blew out water mains throughout the city of Annapolis, and needless to say the local citizenry were not impressed. Senator McCain just happened to be a part of that class as was the late Admiral Charles Larson who related the story to me.
(IN SOME CITIES) that require a check valve on the city line, expansion tank is required to prevent leakage from the relief valve when the water is heated; in some cities, it simply expands back toward city line. The other issue can be water hammer and hammer arrestors (small, spring loaded pistons) installed on both lines near washing machines & other solenoid devices. The sudden shock of solenoids closing can cause such force as to blow apart a copper solder joint, and this happened a few years back at daughter's house where they had a timer connected to hose for lawn sprinkler
