it is NEVER safe to leave boxes open to where someone not familiar with them, such as a child, can get to the live conductors. The cost of having an electrician replace the box is minimal compared to the cost of someone's hospital bill or having to tell someone that their family member died in order for you to save a few bucks! Do the right thing, have the box replaced, have an inspection by authority having jurisdiction, and make sure you have insurance on the property if you are planning on renting it out-FOR YOUR SAFETY !

Hi, if the box had a problem then I would expect the inspector to mention , this would need attention. If he didn't say anything, then its probably safe, and is ok, to leave that way. To be sure, they could send the picture now to the city inspector or an electrician to say if its perfectly safe. or should have something done.
