[DIY] DIY insulation

Monday am we found out contractor had not yet ordered cabinets nor windows, Tuesday am we hired new guy - young and hungry but great recommendations.  Already have cabinets ordered and actually got better quality.  Window lady here Monday, we can buy in-stock doors. Skylights are already repaired - he worked 9 hr straight because it's supposed to rain today.  H/AC system being started today - we actually increased the size of this when we talked with the owner ourselves to get more cooling upstairs.  Plumber coming at 9am, and he is licensed to do the gas line also.  This means much more work for us but I think we will get better quality plus save about $10K.

Insulation —  I need a little input  -  We are going to use foam panels, sealed with canned foam (using the gun) - then FG batts.  XPS panels have R value of 5 per", if we get 2" are we getting R10?  Is it cumulative? will adding R13 batts over that, give us close to an R20 value?

Would it be better to use the 1" panels with higher value Batts?  We have 6" studs.   One advantage of going this route is the foam is light and my husband can assist the young man, who is agreeable to that rather than hiring an additional man.

We liked the contractor and his work -  but I think he is juggling his jobs to keep everyone on the hook.  Wasn't sure the others would want to continue since he had recommended them but the H/AC owner said they had been waiting over a week and had been told we were not ready to start yet. They were here within the hour and materials were already delivered.  The electrician is stalling a little, wanted to come out again this afternoon.  We like him and his work, but I have another one waiting if he decides not to do the job. We can't close in the walls till the electrical is done.

Ya'll are invited to a barn party when we finally get done!
