Not sure how a stud finder works. Something to do with radio waves I think. I just stumbled across the idea when I had a magnet handy. Same experience here, a stud finder gave sometimes inconclusive results.

A good strong magnet will find the heads of drywall screws or nails. Just drag the magnet across the wall and it will pull in around screw heads or nail heads.
