Hi Jan,
Cabinets are a tough call-it all depends on what you want.
On the last two kitchen projects I did, I used "Schrock" cabinets. I first started using them because we too wanted base drawer units of various widths. They have the most complete catalog of products that I am aware of. I actually ended up using Schrock cabinets in that house for all the bath vanities as well as using them as a base for built-in shelving on each side of a fireplace.
Be aware that pricing can be all over the map. I bought some Schrock cabinets from a "big box" (Menards), but later found a better price at a local Wickes Lumber. The last bunch came from a local building-supply contractor, at about 30% less than the Menards price. So, big-box doesn't always equal best price.
Download the "spec guide" from Schrock.com, at the very least it will give you some ideas.
