I've lost track of the original thread but we've always used an Instant Hot faucet in a an office, kitchen/bathroom area where we needed small amounts of hot water. Small water heaters 10-12 gallons can be installed right where you need it. (we sold our 12gal on craigslist for $60) Depending on your water lines. There are numerous brands of foam insulation for the pipes that can be included with regular insulation. In the barn here. we installed heat tape wrapped over the pipes that run in the open areas. The plug is in as area off the stairs, when the temperature is expected to drop significantly we just plug it in, then unplug when it warms up. I can get the book if you want more information.
When we built a new home in '85 we lived in an old mobile that was on the property while building then converted that to a sculpting studio but couldn't have clay go down the drain. First ran it into a large plastic trash can with a spigot attached to a hose. The clay settled at the bottom, the water drained out the hose. Later, my husband installed a drain from the sink and the pipe ran about 10' out to a ditch. This was our own property so not a problem. We are planning on doing the same thing here, we don't have any county restrictions so no problems. If you check any of the "Green" magazines or put that term in google, there are many solutions for using grey water - as well as obtaining and holding water. The whole idea of living off the grid, is figuring out how to do without the usual city conveniences.
