Our stud finder isn't expensive, although it does have a deep scan mode. The studs here are wherever they felt like putting them, some 13" some 17". The stud finder beeps when you hit it, and as long as it's on the stud, then stops when you move off. I have a whole row of nail holes in the half bath trying to find where the studs actually were, then where the fire blocks were before I finally went down and hunted up the stud finder. Have to go slow and keep it flat on the wall for it to be accurate.
