I've used magnetic and ultrasonic stud finders. The magnet was very accurate, IF it found anything. The first ultrasonic stud finder (about $15) was a low end one and it was not terribly accurate or reliable. The second one (about $35) had a "deep scan" mode and was much more reliable and accurate. I used it to locate studs and reinforcing cross members throughout my garage on every wall, including one with a window. Nothing I tried was foolproof but the last one worked well enough that it was definitely worth using.

I just stumbled across the idea when I had a magnet handy. Same experience here, a stud finder gave sometimes inconclusive results.
SteveGreat idea. Ill try that.Is that how the stud finder works?

SteveIf Follow the vertical molding on the windowsill directly straight up, can I assume there would be a beam right there? I am trying to locate the beam so I could put screws in to hang some drapes. My beam finder doesn't really seem to be that accurate. Thanks.
