To the original poster: My only concern would be with your local building inspector, and depends on where you live. In many areas, strange interpretations of the plumbing codes trump any kind of common sense. I would certainly check with the inspector before considering something even slightly "out of the ordinary" for your area. I had one local inspector (in Wisconsin) who insisted that anything not specifically required by the code was automatically prohibited.
To Jan: My advice would be to seal-off that floor drain in the bedroom. I would use semi-permanent expanding plug in the pipe, and then level the floor. This way, if you ever decide to re-purpose the area, you can re-open the drain. Meanwhile, you will have removed the risk of sewer gas venting or a backflow flood.
