Oh I got what he was meaning- to be sure I wasn't trying to do the best pattern to make up for a spongy/nonsolid floor. I agree w you the diagonal def would add more durability as it does diminish overlaying joints. Fortunately our floor is good and solid, didn't need the diagonal to make up for anything, but it would have helped... BUT... my dear hubby wouldn't agree to it, mainly bc this is our first big job (we've done brick laying and 6x6 ceramic in the bathrooms, but never a big job like this. He was too worried about messing up on the cutting and in the time frame that we have. Too bad you're not in the Baton Rouge area of Louisiana, Ron, I'd say hey come on over and show me your technique. lol. Then I'd say hey keep showing me I'm sure we'll get it eventually :u).
Re waste, I did see on a youtube by someone that there is this tool you can use to measure out for diagonal cuts, and if you centered right, you were able to use them on both sides, use almost all of it. But I guess that can vary per room shape too. Ours is a nice rectangle with cabinetry messing up the perfect perimeter of course.
Thanks again guys.

I don't think they are trying to shore up a sagging, moving floor nor was I trying to imply that a diagonal pattern would accomplish any sort of floor strengthening or be any kind of sagging remedy. In so far as waste is concerned, as long as the cuts are 45°, additional waste is very minimal. I waste more tile by mismeasuring than the 45° pattern costs me and I don't mismeasure many.
