RE: [DIY] Sticky Lock, Not engaged

I am not sure what you mean by not engaging, and since you say the deadbolt is locked so the house is secure, makes me think you might be talking about the entry lock. A little more detail about this might help to find the problem.

Not engaging sounds like it might be the latch not catching in the striker plate in the door casing, or if the problem is with the deadbolt, it might be the bolt is not aligned with the striker plate, "the hole in the door frame". Most houses settle after a few years and everything gets out of line. Some houses do it every time it comes a very big rain. I have fixed hundreds of these problems over the years. A few house more than once.

If the problem is with the key, if it is not turning smoothly then it could be in the lock and some kind of lubricant might help. Try turning the key and working the lock with the door open. If it works properly with the door open, then the problem is likely with the alignment of the locks, and the striker plates in the doorframe. Most of the time it is not a big job to move the striker plates and get everything lined back up.

Hope this helps…Larry

Subject: [DIY] Sticky Lock, Not engaged

Since we are on Locks, I have a front door lock that is not engaging; the deadbolt is locked, so house is secure.  My question then, is how to  fix the lock that is not engaging?
