Extend the hardware cloth beyond the frame on both ends and sides if necessary although extending beyond on one side and end will often suffice. Next attach one end to the frame, then tilt the frame and a second piece of scrap to the to the other end.  Attach the cloth to the scrap and then let the frame and the scrap lay flat.  This will stretch the cloth as tight as a fiddle string.  I have always used short 1/4" crown staples for attachment, and placed them at an angle across the welded junction of each run of the cloth.  If you are concerned with the staples not holding over time, run a bead of glue such as gorilla glue which expands when exposed to air and clamp a thin strip over the staples.  I can almost guarantee that the cloth will stay taunt and  in place so much so that it will be nearly impossible to remove later.  The length that extends beyond the frame and was attached to the scrap I simply cut and remove using a small cut-off wheel and one of my Dremel tools.  If you use a piece of scrap at each end of the frame you can use longer staples to hold the cloth until it has been firmly attached to the frame.

I want to make jewelry displays using picture frames and hardware cloth.  I cannot figure out what to use to pull the hardware cloth taut and hold it.  I started the usual way with a staple at each end - on the inside of the inside the frame - but when I tried to go around and pull it taut the staples pull out from the other side. Changed to heavy duty staples and quickly realized they came through the frame and splintered the wood.  Repaired the frame and have googled this but as popular as it is I can't find anything that talks about how to get the hardware cloth taut.  I need something like a fencing come-a-long to hold it.  The commercial ones are very taut with silicone over the wire - but silicone by itself wouldn't be strong enough to hold it taut.  Any suggestions??
