Here is a quick sketch: once you have stapled the screen to the (yellow) scrap and press the scrap back down flat the screen will be tight. I have shown this a bit on the extreme side, but with a couple of trial and error attempts you will get the feel for how much you need to elevate the scrap to get the desired results. I've stretched window screens in this way until you could bounce a quarter off of them.
