I made a test in the closet of three things I had: Mineral Spirits, Paint Thinner, and Jasco Epoxy/Paint Remover. The first two (the mineral spirits and thinner) removed most of the stuff but then later glazed over white. The Jasco product actually did the best and removed all the glue leaving a beautiful wood surface. The problem with using Jasco is that I have to do two rooms and a hall and the stuff is rather expensive. I got it for stripping an ornate door and this is what's left of the second can.
After scraping on the floor some more, I'm thinking I'm going to try sanding it anyway.

As you remember, we were going to use ammonia on the floor to clean it before varnishing. We didn't do it. As it turned out, there was indoor/outdoor carpet glued on underneath the regular carpet. We've scraped the floor and still have black glue on the floor. Now we cannot even try the ammonia thing. If we try to sand, we think that the sandpaper will get full of glue and we'll use a lot of sandpaper. We now think the only real option is to paint the floor which we really don't want to do.
Has anyone out there had similar problems and solved it differently? I would appreciate anything at this point, short of replacing the whole floor.
