[DIY] Re: Shelves

Robert,

Your find "The Saginator" is fabulous!  I was able to play around with the weight loads and distributions to see what is actually optimal and what is tollerable. It will tell you precisely how much of a sag you will get and what is "acceptable" visually.  A remarkable tool.

To find the calculations for particle board you need to know what grade your material is.  This is not something the local hardware store tells you.  I did a little internet searching for various grades and picked a common measure.  BTW, you will find the particle board and MDF materials listed at the bottom of the selection list, after the "real wood".

After studying the feed back from the Saginator, I've decided to use metal angle supports at 1/3 and 2/3 of the shelf length.  One support would be ok for the majority of what I want to put on the shelves, but two would be better for storing books and magazines. The suggestion of the 'T' support sounds good too, but there isn't enough clearance to accomodate a support of that style.

I don't plan to store paints and solvents inside the house, so there won't be any risk of moisture damage to the shelves.

Thank you to all of the thoughtful people in this group who provided useful recommendations.

Deborah
