Re: [DIY] Washing machine drain

I haven't heard of such a configuration.  Normally, the drain hose from the washer will either be directly connected to the down drain under the utility sink OR there will be a separate pipe coming up from the floor
that the washing machine drain hose will just be set into (usually the end of the washing machine pipe is U shaped so it will be set in and then zip tied to the pipe so it won't accidentally fall out).

What you're describing *could* backwash if the Y connection isn't pointing *away* from the sink so that the water is forced in the direction that the water needs to be drained.

I hope so Aki, let me be sure I was clear.  The washing machine is in the center of the wall, the drain is right behind it, and you're correct the drain hose will fit into it.  To the left, about 15" off the floor there is a horizontal drain pipe where eventually the sink drain will connect, continues about 4' and connects to the washing machine drain line with a Y that then goes to the main drain.  I thought when the washing machine drains,  some water will go left and out the open pipe.  I've no idea if there is a "valve" inside that prevents the water from the machine draining back into the sink.  Hmmm, would seem like it though, huh?  Otherwise what would keep it from backing up into the sink?

Every washing machine drainpipe I've ever seen is just an upright pipe that the flex hose is pushed down into.  Unless the pipe is clogged up, you'll never have the pressure needed
for the water to fly back out.  You should be fine.
