Let it be a lesson to everyone to trust your gut instincts if you smell something unusual.  Get it checked out.  Even if it's a matter of cost, it's no excuse not to get it done.  Our energy company around here checked it for free with his detection gadget (luckily I pointed him in the place that he didn't check which alerted the gadget).  Free disconnect and reconnect after you pay a plumber to repair it and get it inspected.

I was a bit surprised to see a hole that big.  Obviously it wasn't seeping out of a joint which could have simply happened recently.  This hole probably took time to gradually get that big and was there for awhile.

This project was definitely NOT a "do it yourself" type of deal!
