In the mid 60's I met one of the chief engineers for General Motors who was driving a company Cadillac with a sealed engine. The oil had over 100,000 miles on it at the time and all that could be done was to change the filter every 5000 miles and add a quart of oil. The oil was some of the blackest I've ever seen outside of a diesel yet the lubricity was still excellent and the engine ran like a top. When it was finally torn down and examined after nearly 250,000 miles there was no appreciable wear and it was still performing at near specs on the dynamo-meter. His contention was that each engine develops its own operating atmosphere and changing the oil every 2 or 3 thousand miles does more to upset this internal balance than it does any good. I have followed up on this to some extent over the years and have learned that this and other similar tests were kept under wraps to pacify the oil and service interests.

I have a Harley and I change the oil at the end of the season regardless of the miles ridden but

that's just because I don't want dirty oil sitting in my engine all winter.
