Re: [DIY] Re: Prevailing Emergency Conditions:

Former Veep Al Gore is now getting a bit of credit for his infamous 1999 claim that "I took the initiative in creating the Internet": He'll be one of the first inductees into the Internet Hall of Fame.

The names were announced Monday at the Internet Society's Global INET 2012 conference in Geneva, Switzerland, and Gore was placed in the "Global Connectors" category for having "made significant contributions to the global growth and use of the Internet."

The group's description of Gore states: "Al Gore, the 45th Vice President of the United States, was a key proponent of sponsoring legislation that funded the expansion of and greater public access to the Internet. Instrumental in helping to create the 'Information Superhighway,' Gore was one of the first government officials to recognize that the Internet's impact could reach beyond academia to fuel educational and economic growth as well."

Internet Hall of Famers were then divided into a Pioneer's Circle, an Innovators circle and a Global Connectors circle. Sure enough, Albert Arnold "Al" Gore, Jr. was on the list, under Global Connectors. According to the Internet Society-

As a U.S. senator in the 1980s, Gore was the first politician to grasp the potential of the internet. Gore wrote the High Performance Computing and Communications Act that passed in 1991 which helped spread the net beyond computer science professionals by providing key funding to internet projects, including the groundbreaking Mosaic browser which led to the dot-com boom.

As a DIW DIY'er (that's Dyed in the Wool) -now where did that
phrase comes from?? Bet Dale knows!!! LOL anyway, like most
DIY'ers here I do a little research before a project, ya know,
little as anyone!! hhehe..so as one of the first users
of the ARPAnet back in the University of Illinois (little bit
of flat land there in Champaign-Urbana)--we got our first
messages from MIT and LivermoreLabs on an ASR-33 teletype
at about 10 words a minute and it was a BIG DEAL to say hello
to the folks from Washington, DC working at their offices at
MIT and Stanford...It led to the Illiac --large mainframe at
U of I until the kids came from Bezerkely and tried blowing it up..

The internet was created like any other government project..
helter-skelter, over-budget, "late--overdue", a new mouse trap
that became an elephant then a zoo...Gore's legislation was
a day late, unneeded and preceded by so many other "creators"
of the internet that his contribution was lost in the shuffle
and barely noticed (except by him, of course! LOL)...Like any
politician he tried to camp-onto a successful venture for claim
a piece of the fame-pie.

So yes, he created the internet..in his own mind!!
