this isn't helpful to your case, but I saw on Antiques Roadshow that they used ammonia to darken oak in the Victorian era.  Wonder if they figured that out from dark pet stains on the floor?

Urine does strange things to blacken wood and it soaks way down; I thought I had properly wood bleached some stains out, but the floor finisher showed me that simple paint thinner makes them jump dark again, telling me the only true repair is to replace the affected boards.
