RE: [DIY] Total Shop - Shopsmith knock-off

I found this answer on the internet:

The TotalShop clone of Shopsmith has been out of business for about 20 years. I bought my machine in Greenvills, SC from the company store. I work on Shopsmiths, Fuso, Totalshop etc. I have at this time a TotalShop, Fuso MP-1 & Shopsmith 520. The TotalShop is not a well made machine. I think that when the boys in Greenville sent the Shopsmith specs to the far ease the instructions were "build me one of these as cheap as you can". As for parts, SOMEShopsmith parts fit. The most common parts to break are speed control parts. These SS parts will fit. By the way, the quickest way to break any of these machines is turning the speed control with the machine not running. Other than the speed control parts it's iffy. The quill shaft is larger on a TotalShop & the way tubes are larger. The acessory tools fit.”

Subject: [DIY] Total Shop - Shopsmith knock-off

Anybody here know anything about the Total Shop? There's one on Craigslist for sale that my husband is thinking about getting but I can't find anything good about it. He wants it mainly to use as a lathe, but if we can't get parts for it, what's the point? The guy on Craigslist is asking $275 for it and says Shopsmith parts are interchangable. Need some input if you have any. Thanks.
