[DIY] Re: hand drill / non-petroleum "old-time" grease...

While I understand your resistance to petroleum-based products, vegetable & cooking oils are a poor choice for lubrication. Try mineral oil instead, it is used in food-safe areas and is easy to get.

These #2 type drills are NOT precision tools, but were very popular because of their low cost. The symptoms you describe are usually due to the large cast gear being somewhat out of true, and are usually minimized by ample lubrication and some adjustment.
