I (finally) realized that my plumbing problems in crawlspace (kitchen sink) were due to loss of proper slope in a section of pipe. This, it allows solids to accumulate. I realized a few years ago that my 75-yo house had a sill plate that rotted behind kitchen sink, dropping wall 1-1/2" (which dropped floor joists in area, which dropped pipe). The same problem can occur underground with ground movement, earthquakes, soil conditions, etc. Like the other said, venting is required also.
