Re: [DIY] blocked sewer line in basement

I had a similar experience with the vent pipe.  Several cleanings of the sewer, even took up the toilet.  Found nothing.  Then we found a bird stuck in the vent pipe.  I guess these vent pipes need a screen covering on them.  At least, don't forget that the vent pipe is just as much a part of the drain as downstream is.

Jamie:  Don't know if this will help but here goes - Ours is a 1946 2 story home in South Dakota.  Purchased in 1999.  'bout 1200 square feet, all told.  Two bathrooms, one on the main floor and one upstairs, both on the main sewer stack - Poured concrete basement with the laundry room in the basement.  Kitchen above the laundry room draining underneath the basement floor to the main stack.  About 5 years ago we began to have the same kind of drainage problems that you've been describing.  One day it would drain just fine and the next day the laundry room drain would back up and rise out of the floor drain.  The two bathrooms never had any problems.  Just the laundry room/kitchen complex.  I bought augers, and replaced as much of the piping as I could get to - To no avail.  Sometimes it would work for months and then bam, we'd have to call Roto R......

After a dozen minor floods or so, a dozen or so visits by Roto R.... - I finally got mad enough to say "we are either going to get this fixed or dig 'er up".  After running the auger clear out to the street (I bought a big one) and getting nothing - Called the City, and they inspected the main line out in the street - Nothing.  So I started pushing a stiff electrical 'fishing' wire through the pipes - Still nothing.  After some head scratching, I went up on the roof to inspect the sewer roof vents with a flashlight.....Bingo.

The sewer roof vent, over the kitchen was plugged solid and I do mean solid.  Spent about a day with a Shop Vac with two extension hoses and the garden hose and the stiff electrical 'fishing' wire and finally got it cleaned out.

That was two summers ago and we have not had one single "Back-Up" since - Not one.  Hope this may help you....Ron
