I wonder if you could use a can of the expanding foam to put in the crack, before you caulk, to close up any gaps. I used construction strength adhesive behind the tub surround that wanted to pop away at one corner, braced it with a 2x4 overnight, then caulked. I assume the wall wasn't quite straight at that point.
