RE: [DIY] Metal vent pipe

I assume it's a round cast iron opening.  I haven't heard of animals crawling down the vent pipe, but if you are concerned, you can get one of those round light-bulb-shaped screens for gutters and stick it in (after opening it up enough to not fall in, of course).  I did that for a replacement vent on the side of one of my buildings where I thought a bird might nest on it.

This is located on the roof sticking up 1 foot from what is flat roof of an 1story addition. My concern is that it is open, there is no seal and wondering if there is a purpose or why it doesnt have screen on it and should it. Opening for rodents to go down?
