[DIY] Oscillating tools/was Fracking and now that you mention it.

From: darrell wolf
on a subject more to the groups reason, has anyone used or have one of the
oscillating multi-tools and whats your opinion of it. worth the cost or a
seldom used tool that can be done without. B&D as one for about $40 that
seems durable and accessories are reasonable.
---------------------------

Yes, and I love mine. I have a Ridgid JobMax cordless, with interchangeable
heads. It's been the handiest tool I have in my toolbox. I've used the
oscillating head to cut wood flush to a plaster wall (without damaging the
wall), cur some stubborn nails holding molding to a plaster wall (no damage
except to the nails), cut the panelling around electrical outlets so the
paneling could be removed without tearing the outlet from the wall (did that
once); the jigsaw head was used to cut some luan which will go under my
laminated flooring, and cut some plywood to do some emergency patchwork on
the exterior of a friend's house trailer. I used the auto-hammer head to
put some nails in an otherwise difficult place to reach. If I had to keep
just *one* of my cordless tools, it'd be the JobMax. It's repaid the cost
many times over.

Corded ones have more power, and one doesn't have to worry about the
batteries giving out just when one needs it, but I like my cordless because
I can use it in places where I don't have access to an outlet. The B&D is
probably fine if you're just using it occassionally for fairly light work,
but if the possibility of any more in the future, then pay a bit more for a
better tool. If I remember correctly, my Job Max was about $100, and with a
special promotion I got an extra head for free.
