That | is an OR. Deselect "Any term" and the OR goes away. It has a major impact on the output of the search. Specially if you have multiple words in the search. Its intentional.

Testing it further, works great with any single word search, but always puts that divider between any multiple word searches and then gives results that include any of the search words rather than all of them.
Does this happen with anyone else? Ed
