I've found all kinds of uses for splines. They make really solid joints with automatic alignment of the joints. I usually use luan door skin but when you use exotic woods of different colors it makes for a good looking joint when exposed. I like door skin because it matches the kerf width of the saw blade. I keep door skin around just for that.
