Re: [DIY] Tongue and grove

I like to use the 1/4 inch plywood because I use the 1/4 inch rabbit bits in the router and shaper.  If the plywood is a little tight I can either drop the rabbit bit a little and do a second pass or put my spline strips through the thickness planer, which is the usual remedy because it is quicker.  Splines are much quicker than doweling and because they cover a larger area stronger as well.  A person quickly learns to make two or more shallow passes when cutting the grooves to prevent splintering and chattering of the cutter.

I've found all kinds of uses for splines. They make really solid joints with automatic alignment of the joints. I usually use luan door skin but when you use exotic woods of different colors it makes for a good looking joint when exposed. I like door skin because it matches the kerf width of the saw blade. I keep door skin around just for that.
