I find that most fountains mix WAY too much syrup in and it makes the soda take flat and sweet.  It's rare that I find a place where the mixture is just right but when I do, it makes all the difference in the world.
 
I agree though that bottled soda definately tastes better.

Well at least it used to.  I have fond memories of sipping a rare fountain coke on a sweltering Kansas afternoon, and the stuff they are serving up now either is totally different or my taster is broken.  Bottled coke had a bite with a hint of bitters but now it seems it is like drinking some nondescript diluted syrup which has neither bite nor hint of charachter.
