Painting would protect the cedar, with no reduction in the natural insecticidal quality.

If you were to apply paint to cedar would it completely cancel out those properties or add strength to it? 

I'm trying to figure out if there is any benefit to painting it....or if you were to paint it would you might as well be using an untreated pine or any other cheaper lumber.
