The 40dBA will be your lower sound level for this dishwasher. A note also for some volume levels. Some companies list their product at sones ratings. In this use of a noise level the lower the sone(s) rating the quitter the level will be. A very good product that almost always uses a sone rating are bathroom vent fans or vent-a-hoods over a stove.
