[DIY] Infrared Thermometer

Menards is discontinuing a certain model of infrared thermometers. My husband picked one up for $19.99. We went back a couple days later and they had dropped the price to $9.99
I bought the last 2 for our kids.

We have been taking the temps of walls, floors, ceilings, windows and doors a zillion times a day.

That took paid for itself yesterday. Several years ago I told my husband that the switch plate in the kitchen felt warm. He checked it out and said there was no problem with the electricity.

Yesterday morning I happened to put my hand against the wall on the other side of that switch. Told him that wall was warm.He checked the temp and it was 70. At least 5 degrees higher than the other walls. He did not tell me this, nor did he do any checking.

Later in the afternoon I checked the temp of the walls...decided there MUST be something going on. Went down into the basement of this old farmhouse with a super tiny basement...  and on top of the large cold air  ductworth I found a very small heat pipe...with the end of it going up INTO THE WALL.The lever to turn off the inside flapper/door was in the open position.

Shame on us for never seeing it.. we have been here since 1985. In our own defense that hot air duct was pretty small and well hidden  above the large cold air duct.

That little booger is now off. We should be saving on propane from now on.
