There are both portable and ceiling mounted including gas fired ones.
The principle of them is to heat the object (person or animal) underneath or in front of them as opposed to heating the air directly.
The main safety issue is with the portable ones. Anything falling within immediate vicinity is subject to burning. I suggest only using them when you are present (and not asleep). Permanently installed ceiling mounted units would be much safer.
