Pipe clamps are heavy, and good bar clamps can get expensive in a hurry. I have acquired a fair selection of bar clamps but often need one or two that exceed what I have in length. My solution has been to cut 2 inch rings from 3 and 4 inch PVC scraps and then I can hook two clamps end to end using one of the rings. Poor boys have Poor ways, but they work. You can also use scrap strips of 3/4 inch plywood and using a hole saw cut a hole in each end to receive the end of the bar clamp. We don't throw much away around our house. When city wide spring clean up starts I will be cruising the streets in search of odds and ends of furniture that are be discarded. The sides and ends of old dressers and bureaus drawers yield a great source of hardwood project pieces. Sometimes I take the whole piece for the other woods. Cleaning off the finish is a great use of worn planer blades just before you are ready to install a new set.
