Re: [DIY] wish this could be more DIY

Yeah, I am exploring that option, weighing cost and time to
get up and running again.
Waiting on the dealer getting back to me with with a quote
for replacing the whole unit vs trying to flush and repair parts.
Leaning toward full unit replacement if feasible.

The unit is about 10 years old. I think freon was phased
out before then, but other refrigerants probably have
similar problems with breaking down to compounds that are
hostile to the system.

I'd hoped the system would have lasted longer than this.
Unlike with an air based heat pump the geothermal could live
inside, out of the weather.
Looking into any other design issues in the system that
might have also shortened the life.

There was an issue early on, where the wiring to the compressor
was damaged, and the compressor had to be replaced under warranty.
Its possible that there was refrigerant breakdown byproducts that
were not flushed from that repair and over time caused exactly
the problem you mention, leading to the early death of the system.

Its a nice setup when it works, realizing how much I much
I'd gotten spoiled by how well it does work..
