[DIY] Re: Now about space heaters

In my opinion mobile homes are not so dangerous that you need to double
your life insurance. Yes most mobile homes are cheaply made which
results in them being a total loss in fire. I have been a professional
fire fighter for 19 years and have made many mobile home fires. None
that I remember were due to the manufactures installed wiring.

Aluminum wire is safe. Aluminum conducts electricity fine. A lot of
service lines are aluminum wire. The problem comes in when people splice
aluminum and copper together or use devices that are not for aluminum
wire. The dissimilar metals react and the oxidation causes increased
resistance which may result in over heating. There are lots of
conventional houses wired with aluminum. When I worked with an
electrician, we did maintenance on an old apartment complex that was
wired with aluminum wire. We made sure we used the right material and it
is safe. It has never had a fire due to the wiring.

I would not be too worried about what type of wire in the wall, but that
you do not over load a circuit. If the home has 15 amp breakers, I would
only run a 1500 watt heater on a circuit by itself.
